Getting an FNB account: This article describes what South Africans should do to get an FNB account in preparation for using PayPal to receive monies. As a South African I got an FNB account when I wanted to use PayPal to receive monies. At the time it was only FNB that one could use to receive monies from PayPal.
You may be thinking of starting to try making money online, or may have already started to but you need to set yourself up to receive your earnings from PayPal if that’s the only way the places will pay you.
In order for South Africans to receive their earnings from websites through PayPal – like for example from online writing sites, stock photo selling sites, or online survey sites – South Africans can open an FNB account and a PayPal account.
1)
Open a PayPal account online. You will get to a point during the process of opening a PayPal account where you will see that PayPal requires you to add a bank card number. Not just any bank card number will do.
2)
Go to FNB with your ID, and with proof of residency – like a recent telephone account addressed to you, with your residential address showing too.
3)
Join the queue to see an FNB consultant. Ask to open a cheque account – double check with the consultant that when you receive your FNB cheque account card that it will have the VISA logo on it.
4)
Once everything is filled in, take the slip you get from the accountant that has your FNB bank account number on it and go and deposit at least R50 to R100 into your brand new FNB bank account. You need about at least a clear R20 to R30 in your FNB bank account to cover what you need to do in your PayPal account later.
5)
Once done at First National Bank go home and wait for your notification that you can come in and collect your bank card – for me it was about 4 or 5 days later.
6)
Go get your card and sit down with a consultant to help you register for online banking.
Your next steps will be to go home and
a)
fill in your FNB bank card number on PayPal
b)
link up your PayPal account with your online FNB account
It’s a bit of a process, the whole thing, setting yourself up to receive monies from PayPal, but if it sounds like too much work and schlepp, perhaps trying to make money online is not for you. To make decent money online one needs to put in a lot of learning (at least reading and following instructions), work, time and effort.
